Addressing grand challenges, such as climate change, social inequality, and the transition to sustainable energy, requires innovation processes that bring together diverse knowledge, resources, and societal perspectives. Open social innovation offers an approach through which firms, public institutions, civil society, and communities can collaborate to develop solutions that create social and environmental value.
This ongoing research project explores how dynamic capabilities and artificial intelligence (AI) support the design, implementation, and scaling of open social innovation initiatives. It examines how participating actors identify societal needs and mobilise resources to translate collaborative ideas into viable and inclusive solutions. Particular attention is given to how sensing, seizing, and transforming capabilities support these processes and how AI can enhance collaboration and informed decision-making.
Building on our findings, we are deepening our understanding of how these mechanisms operate across different sectors and institutional contexts, with a particular focus on renewable energy and sustainability transitions. Ongoing research investigates how collaborative innovation can reconcile economic viability with social equity, enable meaningful community participation, and support the long-term development of solutions. It also examines the opportunities and tensions associated with AI, including its implications for inclusion.
The project advances theoretical and practical understanding of how collaborative innovation, organisational capabilities, and digital technologies contribute to addressing grand challenges. It provides actionable insights for practitioners and policymakers seeking to develop inclusive innovation processes, support socially oriented initiatives, and enable responsible scaling that sustains their social and environmental purpose.
